Most people think that literacy is all about reading and writing. But the most critical component of literacy begins well before the child can pull a word from the page. I think we all intrinsically understand that the crux of literacy is the ability to convey and receive meaning through words and that process begins with the spoken word.
WHAT IS VOCABULARY ?
Wikipedia defines vocabulary as a set of familiar words within a person’s language. A vocabulary, usually developed with age, serves as useful and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring if knowledge. Vocabulary mastery is the key to building a strong foundation for success and it is the ultimate goal for reading.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING VOCABULARY IN PRESCHOOL AND BEYOND.
1. It makes the children understand what they are reading:– Vocabulary is the foundation for comprehension. Unfamiliar words become holds in the text, preventing the children from completely understand what they have just read.
2. It bolsters the children’s ability to grasp ideas and think more logically:- the greater number of words they have, the more they can interpret ideas from others and express their own ideas.
3. It boosts the children’s power of persuasion: having a rich vocabulary will help the children to communicate in a more engaging way. Relying on one to two words to describe an idea will be repetitive and not as persuasive relying on a vocabulary of 10 – 15 similarly descriptive terms.
4. It helps the children to make a good impression on others :-. How articulate the pupils constitute a big part of the impression they make on others.
5. It helps the children to build fluency.
6. It helps the children to become more intelligent.
