2021 Korea-Nigeria Drawing Competition
The drawing competition for primary schools in FCT, organized by the Korean Cultural Centre and FCT Universal Basic Education Board, themed “Korea & Nigeria in unity against COVID-19” has been held at Model Primary School, Maitama, Abuja, on April 28, 2021.
The Korean Cultural Centre and FCT UBEB Directors remarks, marks the commencement of the drawing competition by pupils.
The Korea – Nigeria Drawing Competition is a yearly competition hosted by Korean Cultural Centre and FCT Universal Basic Education Board since 2010. It was initiated as part of the ceremonies to mark the establishment and official opening of the Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria. The competition has since remained an annual event.
The Drawing competition focuses on engendering creativity through arts among primary school pupils in FCT. Earlier in March this year, an art workshop was held for selected art teachers in FCT as a prelude to the drawing competition.
There are 32 participating Primary schools from different areas of FCT including both public and private schools with a total of 100 pupils taking part in the competition. However, in adherence to COVID-19 guidelines, the pupils were divided into small groups and each group stayed in a different location with good spacing during the competition.
After the competition, the screening and grading of the drawings will take place at a later date in May while the Award ceremony will also hold in May 2021.
Significance of the event:
The aim of the drawing competition has been to engender creativity and promote better understanding of facts about Nigerian and Korean societies among Nigerian students. The competition also helps to improve the problem-solving skills of students who participate in it while the Award and prize-giving ceremony encourages them to strive more to excel in their various academic and co-curricular activities.
The event equally serves as a means of promoting friendly relations between the people of Nigeria and the Korean people.

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, and pupils, My name is Lee Jin Su and as the Director of the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria, it is my honour to welcome you to this year’s KCCN’s annual Korea-Nigeria Pupils Annual Drawing Competition, the 10th edition. This competition is held every year because there are a lot of bright minds amongst our children. But why art? Art because it is a form of expression and encouragement to creativity. And we all know children are the most creative, even sometimes outsmarting us as parents. That’s one of the common attributes all cultures and races share in common including Korea and Nigeria- creative children.
Another major thing we share in common is our continuous fight against Covid-19. This informed us to this year’s theme; “Korea & Nigeria in unity against COVID-19”.
Which is why this theme is important. We have observed how our governments and the masses have been dealing with Covid-19; however, we have never really considered the pandemic through our children’s eyes. This is that opportunity.
With over 32 schools here, and over 80 children, this poses an occasion to discover through art, what the younger generations think about Korea and Nigeria uniting against Covid-19, which is a product of the ongoing relationship between our two nations, being promoted by our organization, the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria.
It is our hope that this continues to promote and foster unity, understanding, as well as continuous bilateral relations between us. We thank all persons that made this event possible.
Good luck to all the pupils here today, I definitely know you will all do an amazing job! May the best pencil win!
